Another experiment

The following column was in the paper last Monday, Jan 6.

Chess
Places and piece value
Maxim: Always consider captures (by you or opponent). For each chess piece N, B, R, and Q place the man on an empty board at each of the following three locations:  center, corner, and edge.  In each case count the number of squares that the man can move to from that location.  For the Q the numbers are 27, 21, and 21. These numbers tell us a lot about the value of the pieces and the best place for the pieces.  Which piece is most improved by being moved from the edge of the board to the center?

We will move to the Murray Calloway Co library on Nov. 4th.
We will meet there on Nov 4, 11, 18,     but not 25th.
We will meet there on Dec 2, 9, 16, 30   but not 23rd.

Magnus Carlsen, the 22-year-old Norwegian who has been the most dominant chess player since 2010, finally broke through on Friday to win the game’s most important title, the world championship, for the first time.

meeting time and place change
