1.  THE MONDAY NIGHT CHESS CLASS for (FEB 24) WILL BE HELD FROM 2:30 TO 3:30
2. THERE WILL BE A SIMULTANEOUS EXHIBITION AFTER THE TOURNAMENT
The current County Champion will take on all comers simultaneously
The public is invited as observers or participants.
You may begin any time between 3:30 and 4:30.
This tournament will not be rated.  USCF memb is not required
The extra late entry fee on Sat. Morning is cancelled and it will still be $10. 
2014 Murray Calloway County Chess Championships

Open to all, but only county residents are eligible for county titles.

The Mur-Cal Chess Club will host the county championship chess tournament on Saturday, Feb. 22, 2014 on the third floor of the Curris Center in Murray KY.  Registration will begin at 9:00 and end at 9:30.  Each player will have 30 minutes for each game for a total of 60 minutes for each game. The first round will begin at 9:30, the second round will begin at 10:30; the third round will begin at noon and the 4^th at approximately 1 PM noon.  We will finish at approximately 2 PM.  This is not a knock-out tournament -- everyone plays each round. 

Trophies will be given in each category to the county scholastic champions (K-3, K-5, K-8, K-12) and the tournament winner.  The top finishing Murray State Student will become the 2014 College Champion.  There will also be a trophy for the top finisher from each school system – Calloway, Murray, Lamp.  

               If there are sufficient advance entries, then there will be a separate section for less experienced players.  No memberships are required.  There is a $10 entry fee for those who register in advance (by 6 PM Friday, Feb 21).  No other fees will be required.

LET’S PLAY CHESS!

Ages 5-95

The Mur-Cal Chess Club is composed of all ages and has been active for about two years.  The club would like to share its knowledge and offer classes to teach anyone, adults and youth alike, how to play chess.  Many of the present members learned how to play chess themselves by attending the club’s meetings.

            Four classes will be offered next month on Mondays - February 3, 10, 17, & 24 from 5:00-6:00pm each night.  There will be an opportunity to play other participants until 7:00pm.  Anyone who would like to learn how to play chess is encouraged to take these classes.  Parents or guardians of children ages 8 and under are asked to stay with their child.  The classes will be held on the 3^rd floor of the Curris Center.  Class size is limited.  Registrations will be taken on a first come first served basis.

            The fee for the classes is $10.00, which is paid one time on the first night and covers the class materials.  The classes will be taught by Dr. Wayne Bell, Professor Emeritus at MSU, and other members of the club. Anyone who already knows how to play chess is also welcome to participate in this exciting opportunity.  Three levels of ability will be honored:  beginning (101), intermediate (102), and advanced (103). 

            Chess is a game that teaches patience, logistics, and analytical thinking, among many other attributes.  There are opportunities for children and adults to play in tournaments in surrounding areas and even on the regional, state, and national levels.  Some of the tournaments even offer college scholarships. Becoming a member of the United States Chess Federation enables your participation in tournaments to be rated and entitles you to receive a magazine that also teaches chess maneuvers and challenges.  So, the possibilities are endless!

Places and piece value

Maxim: Always consider captures (by you or opponent). For each chess piece N, B, R, and Q place the man on an empty board at each of the following three locations:  center, corner, and edge.  In each case count the number of squares that the man can move to from that location.  For the Q the numbers are 27, 21, and 21. These numbers tell us a lot about the value of the pieces and the best place for the pieces.  Which piece is most improved by being moved from the edge of the board to the center?

Here's a question?  If you put a knight on the chessboard he can move to 2, 3, 4, places and 8 places if he is in the center.   Can he move to five or seven squares?  What is the average number of moves that a knight can make from the 64 squares on the board.
