2013 Murray Calloway County Chess Championships

The Mur-Cal Chess Club hosted the 2013 County Championship Chess Championships on Saturday, August 3, 2013 at the Calloway County Public Library. The tournament attracted students from the Murray and Calloway systems as well as home schooled students.  Student awards were based on 2012-13 grade levels.

Nickolas Holcomb (2-0-2) successfully defended his title as the Primary (K-3) Champion.  Mason Lu (2-0-2) edged out the defending champion, Liam Hereford, for the Elementary (K-5) Title , Samuel Lewis (3-0-1) was a full point ahead of all other K-8 students and won the Middle School title.  Benjamen Thome (3-0-1) is the new High School Champion. 

The title of Challenger was won by Wayne Bell and consequently he will play a 4 game match with Josiah Hereford, the current champion, for the title of 2013 County Champion.

2013 County Championships

2013 Murray Calloway County Chess Championships
Saturday, August 3, 2013
Open to Calloway County residents adults and children.
The Mur-Cal Chess Club will host the county championship chess tournament on Saturday, August 3, 2013 at the Calloway County Public Library. Registration will begin at 10:00 and end at 10:30.  Each player will have 30 minutes for each game for a total of 60 minutes for each game. The first round will begin at 10:30, the second round will begin at 12 noon and subsequent rounds ASAP.  This is not a knock-out tournament -- everyone plays each round.  The event will end at or before 4:00.
Trophies will be given in each category to the county scholastic champions (K-3, K-5, K-8, K-12 – grade level as of 2012-2013 school year) and the tournament winner.  The tournament winner will become the challenger and play a match with the current county champion, Josiah Hereford, the winner of that match will be the will be the (overall) County Champion and receive $100. 
          All students who were in kindergarten through 12th grade last school year are invited to participate.  If there are sufficient entries, then there will be a separate section for younger players.  No memberships are required.  There is a $5 entry fee.
