2014 Murray Summer Open

Josiah Hereford, Murray’s 16 year old rising chess star, continued to impress all who watch him play by defeating a multiple state champion winner – Jerry Baker – in the last round to win the First Murray Summer Open which was held at the Curris Center on June 28^th.  Hereford got the nod on tie breaks over Michael Robertson from Tennessee who also had scored three wins and one draw. 

The tournament was directed by Thomas Knight a teacher and chess coach at Graves County H S who is a rising organizational star in Western KY chess.  The tournament, held for the first time this year, attracted 24 players from 4 states and the organizer Wayne Bell expects that it will grow in future years. 

In other categories Brad Smith of TN won Class C, Nathan Summerville of Graves Co won class D, and the MSU Chess Club Sponsor, Engineering Professor James Hereford, won the under 1200 category.

The Novice section was won by seventh grader Mason Lu with 3 wins and one draw.   Asher Cunningham finished second, Justin Wallace was third, and Bristal Watkins won the under 800 category.

I will be leaving April 16 and be gone for 6 weeks.

His tournament would be a good note to end the Chess Season and then we will be back in June for the camp on June 23-27.

 

2014Calloway County Chess Championships

Calloway County Chess Championships

The 2014 Calloway County Chess Championships were held Saturday in the Curris Center.  The games were followed by a “simultaneous exhibition” by the outgoing County Champion Josiah Hereford.  Josiah played 9 games at the same time.  They were arranged in a circle with Josiah inside of it.  He would walk from one board to the next.  When he arrived at a board the opponent would then make a move and Josiah would make his move and then move on.  Josiah’s score was 8 wins and only one draw to the new County High School Champion Samuel Lewis.

James Hereford, a Professor of Engineering at MSU, became the 2014 Calloway County Chess Champion by scoring 3 wins and one draw.  Austin Clark a Junior from Mayfield retained his title as the MSU Champion and has his name, for the second time, placed on the plaque along with all of the other champions back to 1980.  The overall High School County Champion is MHS student Samuel Lewis who won three of his 4 games, the Middle School Champion is LAMP homeschool student Liam Hereford who also won 3 games, and, by the same score Nickolas Holcomb of MMS, won the Elementary County Championship.  The primary County Champion is Ginni Mikulcik from LAMP and Carter Coleman of Calloway County East won the Kindergarten category.

There were several new players. The seventh place novice was Olivia Mikulchk from LAMP, sixth went to Gavin Klotz, fifth to Caleb Cauley, fourth to Connor Blalock, third to Ethan Klotz, second to Hayden Holcomb, and the first place novice went to Luke Cross all from Murray Middle.

In intra school competition there was a massive tie with the tie break wins going to Xavier Brown for the Calloway County system, Mason Lu for the Murray system, and Asher Cunningham for the LAMP group of home schoolers.  For more information on chess in the area go to http://mur-calchess.blogspot.com/ .

1.  THE MONDAY NIGHT CHESS CLASS for (FEB 24) WILL BE HELD FROM 2:30 TO 3:30
2. THERE WILL BE A SIMULTANEOUS EXHIBITION AFTER THE TOURNAMENT
The current County Champion will take on all comers simultaneously
The public is invited as observers or participants.
You may begin any time between 3:30 and 4:30.
This tournament will not be rated.  USCF memb is not required
The extra late entry fee on Sat. Morning is cancelled and it will still be $10. 
2014 Murray Calloway County Chess Championships

Open to all, but only county residents are eligible for county titles.

The Mur-Cal Chess Club will host the county championship chess tournament on Saturday, Feb. 22, 2014 on the third floor of the Curris Center in Murray KY.  Registration will begin at 9:00 and end at 9:30.  Each player will have 30 minutes for each game for a total of 60 minutes for each game. The first round will begin at 9:30, the second round will begin at 10:30; the third round will begin at noon and the 4^th at approximately 1 PM noon.  We will finish at approximately 2 PM.  This is not a knock-out tournament -- everyone plays each round. 

Trophies will be given in each category to the county scholastic champions (K-3, K-5, K-8, K-12) and the tournament winner.  The top finishing Murray State Student will become the 2014 College Champion.  There will also be a trophy for the top finisher from each school system – Calloway, Murray, Lamp.  

               If there are sufficient advance entries, then there will be a separate section for less experienced players.  No memberships are required.  There is a $10 entry fee for those who register in advance (by 6 PM Friday, Feb 21).  No other fees will be required.

2013 Murray Calloway County Chess Championships

Open to Calloway County residents adults and children.

The Mur-Cal Chess Club will host the county championship chess tournament on Saturday, August 3, 2013 at the Calloway County Public Library. Registration will begin at 10:00 and end at 10:30.  Each player will have 30 minutes for each game for a total of 60 minutes for each game. The first round will begin at 10:30, the second round will begin at 12 noon and subsequent rounds ASAP.  This is not a knock-out tournament -- everyone plays each round.  The event will end at or before 4:00.

Trophies will be given in each category to the county scholastic champions (K-3, K-5, K-8, K-12 – grade level as of 2012-2013 school year) and the tournament winner.  The tournament winner will become the challenger and play a match with the current county champion, Josiah Hereford, the winner of that match will be the will be the (overall) County Champion and receive $100. 

          All students who were in kindergarten through 12^th grade last school year are invited to participate.  If there are sufficient entries, then there will be a separate section for younger players.  No memberships are required.  There is a $5 entry fee.
